NSF Awards: 1849243
The Center for the advancement of wearable technology intends to advance the fundamental and applied science of biosensors, portable power, and data analytics to enable next-generation wearables while providing an engaged and diverse workforce for the Nation’s wearable technology (WT) sector and stimulating the economic development in the Commonwealth in concert with the Jurisdiction’s robust medical device industry.
Mission: Create and sustain an internationally competitive center that will conduct R&D and innovation, insert a WT educational component into the K-20 continuum, promote human resource development in WT, and promote innovation and commercialization in the Jurisdiction.

Hello everyone, it is a pleasure to participate in the 2022 video showcase.
As a fellow member of the Center for the Advancement of Wearable Technologies (CAWT) of Puerto Rico, I welcome you to our presentation!!!
Here we show the participation of the members of the program in various areas grouped in biocompatible materials and sensors (IRG1), batteries and energy generators (IRG2), data management for portable devices (IRG3), and hand in hand with an innovation ecosystem (IE) that pushes us to be entrepreneurs. In addition to developing research, CAWT is firmly committed to scientific divulgation to schools and the general public, encouraging the development of scientific activities for a better planet, and motivating future generations by building STEM talents.
We hope you enjoy our video since we are proud to belong to this great Puerto Rican research group.
Join us watching our video and leaving your comments and suggestions!

Buenas tardes.

It has been a privilege to be part of IRG3, from the study of computing, big data and artificial intelligence to supporting scientists from other areas. It is a multidisciplinary experience where we all learn new things while providing solutions from our perspective to other fields, such as Chemistry and materials science, which a few years ago I did not imagine being involved.

The innovative research, marketing and outreach of Center for the Advancement of Wearable Technology is exciting given the abundance of wearable technology that is currently available. This is a great program and I am wondering if you could answer a few of my questions so that I can learn more. How do middle and high school students learn about the Center? What types of courses would students need to take to participate in the research at the Center? What types of careers are available to students who are interested in wearable technology?

Thanks for the questions; they are attractive. In the center, we focus on developing from the primary materials to creating a device model, the whole process through a multidisciplinary interaction of graduate students. Answering your questions,
1) The scholarship holders are committed to disseminating the science we carry out. Depending on the area in which we develop, we carry out activities focused on school students, where they interact when carrying out the activities that we carry out.
2) Specific courses are not required for them to belong to the center; it depends on their career and the area of research that attracts them.
3) As a multidisciplinary science group, we are open to all STEM careers. They have the desire and curiosity to carry out research with a projection to applications of this type of technology.

This is a great area of significant interest and it is commendable how you have combined computation and experimental work while also taking care of innovation and commercialization.
Have there been patents filed for some of your wearable technology? How are you reaching out to companies and are there any startups expected from the work?

It's nice to know that you like the video and the work we show.
To answer the question, we still do not have a published patent; the center is relatively new, it has been created for three years, but the different IRGs are evaluating specific works that are potential patents. The innovation ecosystem group helps scholarship holders to apply for projects. We have applied to two challenges, Energy Tech university price and Energy algae price, leaving a group chosen at algae price.

In addition collaboration with different industries and companies has being established to explore commercialization of the new technologies developed at the center

Interesting work! Could you provide more information regarding the recruitment and retention of your students? Specifically, are there wraparound services that your center offers students undergraduate - graduate that have been most effective?

An annual call for applications is held for the program's recruitment, and the opportunity is advertised in the five institutions affiliated with our center. Recruitment is based on merit. Students must have a grade point average of 3 or higher and must contact one of the researchers affiliated with the center.
In terms of retention, an individualized development plan is prepared for each student from the beginning to identify their needs and goals and support them and increase retention in STM

Thank you for the information. What are the common supports provided across the program derived from the IDP? Are there services/supports that have surfaced that the project team did not anticipate?

The training and courses offered to our fellows are selected based on our participants' needs and goals in their development plans (IDP). We offer courses in our three research areas biosensors, batteries, and data science. Each month, at least one professional development workshop is offered to our fellows and teachers, and high school students receive follow-up visits to monitor their projects' progress. The workshops include science communications strategies, job and fellowship applications, career paths, scientific instrumentation, and data analysis.
One thing that was not expected was the online scenarios that have become the primary mechanism of communication and education due to the pandemia and different catastrophic events on our Island. The development of online workshop training and mentoring at the beginning was a challenge, especially for the development of prototypes of wearable devices, but the good thing is that now we are equipped to train our participants in hybrid formats

Wow! The number of different wearables that were shared is amazing. The varied backgrounds and fields of the fellows/students/researchers also shows the cross collaboration and understand that needs to occur. When working with the teachers and students, how are the topics and content brought down to a level that allows them to engage in the research?
Liz Diaz-Vazquez
Full Professor- Researcher
Dear Christine, thanks for watching our video and commenting. Our graduate and undergraduate students fellows are trained in science communication to facilitate the communication of their research to broader audiences. This training helps them effectively bring the topics to the level that allows teachers and high school students to engage in the research.
Also, prior to the research experience, teachers and high school students participate in different workshops that go from good practice in research, coding, Arduino, and engineering and design principles. It helps them to grasp the fundamental concepts prior to starting the research projects.
