The STEM Research Inquiry Summer Enrichment (STEM RISE) program is a collaborative project between the University of Houston (UH) College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics STEM teacher preparation program, teachHOUSTON, and the UH College of Medicine. STEM RISE activities and strategic planning are conducted in partnership with community members and instructional leaders from Jack Yates High School located in Third Ward where UH resides. The program is designed to better prepare future STEM teachers, medical professionals, and support high school students in empirical STEM research and laboratory experiences. The project intends to engage high school students from the predominantly Black community in summer research experiences to enhance learning and introduce them to STEM career pathways. Excerpts for the video were recorded during the summer of 2021, when the STEM RISE team conducted a pilot which allowed preservice STEM teachers to work collaboratively with medical students to develop hands-on lessons that were inclusive of science and medical research content.

This multilayered program offers so much, not only to high school students, but to the undergraduate STEM/teachHOUSTON majors and College of Medicine graduate students to serve as mentors and to receive mentoring from faculty.

We found the multi-layered mentoring happened organically in our grant, and was one of the most valuable pieces. Various components of the program involved college students working with high school students along with high school teachers and university faculty.

Having the high school teachers participate along with a group of students from their school was one of the many wonderful ideas our PI, Dr. Balakrishna, included in the design. In addition to providing professional development for high school teachers, along with the college faculty, it also helped the high school students feel comfortable and connected (and accountable!)

Loved your multi-layered mentoring and research summer program. We had a multi-layered STEM summer program where we brought in high-school students with our undergraduate students serving as near-peer mentors. College faculty in turn mentored the college students. High school teachers accompanied the high school students and Harris-Stowe State University instructors gave instruction. A specialist brought in Sustainability and Urban Ecology project and research experiences for all participants. Education renewal and mentorship were strong themes of the Summer Academy. In the last academy HSSU students served as supervised instructors.
I think your idea of including graduate students is fantastic and this component would have been great for our undergraduate students.

I really like this project as well - it's a great example of partnership across different departments and members of the community. I'm a little bit confused about the relationship of the pre-service teachers to the high school learners. Is the intention that the high-school students might become STEM educators? Or is the idea to provide some STEM instruction to HS students as part of engaging pre-service educators with STEM practitioners?

Hi Barry, You got it right. The pre-service teachers support the high school students outside the lab by providing instruction on the topics and methods that the high school students are encountering in the lab. They will not have had the benefits of college-level STEM courses yet and the extra targeted lessons by budding STEM teachers will make the material more relatable to their level. On the other hand, the pre-service STEM teachers gain experience in supporting students who pursue inquiry-based research projects. It's a win-win.

Hi Stacy! We are recruiting students by speaking with different STEM classes at Jack Yates High School and working with STEM teachers and instructional specialists. Although the grant funding mostly supports the undergraduates, we have, fortunately, been able to fundraise to support high school students with stipends for the research experience.

Hi Rita, great question! The high school students will be paired to have a peer mentor and will have undergraduates and medical students on the team with them. They will have experts and peers to share with and work alongside.

Great questions! This summer we will have three research groups, working in three separate research lab projects. Each group consists of 1-2 medical students, 1-2 undergraduates, and 2 high school students. We are exploring working with the high school students to use this research for their IB internal assessment requirements.

We have recently debated about beginning a learning experience that would blend high school students, college students, faculty, and local industry leaders in a campus work-based learning opportunity. Hi Tracy! So happy to hear that you are also exploring a way to include high school students and college students in a campus learning opportunity! While we are still early in the program, one thing we have learned that it is essential to build solid relationships with the campus teachers and involve them in recruitment practices. The teacher and admin buy-in helps with getting opportunities to speak directly to the students which is also very important. We also had to fundraise to garner funds for stipends that high school students will receive for completing this experience. We are hoping this can help additional students participate.
